HMS Surprise Handcrafted Wooden Model Tall Ship 37"

The HMS Surprise is the ship seen in the movie Master & Commander! The replica is on display at The Maritime Museum of San Diego.

This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, HMS Surprise tall ship model is fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit).

This tall ship scale model was specially designed & built by the plank on frame method (joining multiple small pieces of wood like Rosewood, Mahogany, Teak and other exotic tropical wood together on the hull). The tall ship model is built exactly to scale as the original HMS Surprise was with many details. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.

HMS Surprise was a 38-gun frigate of the Hebe Class of the Royal Navy, although all these Fifth Rate frigates were re-classed as 46-gun under the general re-rating of February 1817, from when carronades on the quarter deck and forecastle were included in the rating. She carried a complement of 284 officers and ratings, and a primary armament of 28 eighteen-pounder guns on her upper deck, with 8 nine-pounder guns (and 6 32-pounder carronades) on her quarter deck and 2 nine-pounder guns (and 2 more 32-pounder carronades) on her forecastle.

The HMS Surprise replica was launched in Nova Scotia in 1970 as HMS ROSE. She was a near exact replica of the 6th rate frigate of the same name which served the British Navy with distinction in the American War of Independence.

The replica HMS Rose sailed the oceans of the world for 30 years as a sail training vessel. Then in March of 2001, she was sold to 20th Century Fox to be modified for use in the production of the movie, "Master and Commander". For that she was re-named, HMS Surprise.  After the completion of the movie, she was sold to The Maritime Museum of San Diego where she is on display today.

This is an Exclusive Edition Model Ship, where each model is uniquely identified by a serial number, which is laser cut to the hull of each model. In this edition, we are able to identify the production date of a model, the material that was used on the model, the craftsmen who worked on each area of the model, the individual who inspected the model and also the professional packaging staff.
