Handcrafted Columbia 1899 Wooden America's Cup Model 29.5"
This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Columbia 1899 model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit).
This exclusive Columbia America's Cup yacht model was handcrafted using the highest quality selection of precious wood by the traditional plank on bulkhead method (after the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette).
The Columbia 1899 model has been hand sanded, hand painted with polyurethane paint with white topsides. The hull bottom is stained and varnished to a mirror-like finish. The very detailed deck fittings are reproduced with custom-made brass and chromed brass castings.

The sailboat model is mounted with brass pedestals on a high quality hardwood display base with gold trim and a brass nameplate. The model is built exactly to scale as the original Columbia was. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish. This model combines the careful execution of every detail with the high quality of the materials and the craftsmanship.

The Columbia was the defender of the tenth America's Cup race in 1899 against British challenger Shamrock as well as the defender of the eleventh America's Cup race in 1901 against British challenger, Shamrock II. It was the first vessel to win the trophy twice in a row.
Columbia had a nickel steel frame, a tobin bronze hull, and a steel mast which broke during her 1st trials due to electrolysis. It was replaced by another in Oregon pine for the rest of the trials.
Columbia was designed and built in 1898 by Nathanael Herreshoff and his brothers for owners J. P. Morgan and Edwin Dennison Morgan of the New York Yacht Club. It was the third winning defender built by Herreshoff. As ever, the boat had been built in an utmost secrecy, forbidding the access of the yard to every journalists and photographer.
Columbia had no difficulty in beating Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock, designed by Fife Jr III. Before his promise to come back to the following America's Cup, Sir Thomas Lipton paid tribute to his rival: "Mister Herreshoff has shown that he is the greatest yacht designer in the world".

The Columbia America's Cup model measures 29.5"(75cm) length x 28.3"(72cm) height. The Columbia is truly a work of art that is sure to become a treasured family heirloom.
