Hand Built Rainbow 1934 Half Hull Wooden Model

This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Rainbow 1934 model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit).

This America's Cup half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette.

The Rainbow 1934 model is then sanded, hand painted with white topsides and a gold cove stripe. The hull is stained and varnished to a mirror-like finish. The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate. The half hull model is built exactly to scale as the original Rainbow was. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.

The Rainbow was designed by W. Starling Burgess and was launched on May 15 1934, at the Herreshoff Yard in Bristol, Rhode Island. She was built for Mike Vanderbilt to defend the America’s Cup against Endeavour. Rainbow beat Endeavour in the last four races to win the 1934 America's Cup.

Sadly the Rainbow was sold for scrap in 1940. A replica of the famous Rainbow is being built in Holland at the Bloemsma yard, the keel was laid in 2009.

The half hull model plaque measures 29.5"(75cm) x 7.8"(20cm) and the model measures 23.6"(60cm) long from bow to stern. It's an historic half hull model sailboat that is sure to become a treasured family heirloom.
