Hand Built Columbia 1958 12 Meter Half Hull Wooden Model
This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Columbia 1958 model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit).
This America's Cup half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette.
The Columbia 1958 model is then sanded, hand painted with light grey topsides, white bottom paint , gold cove stripe and blue boot stripe. The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate.The half hull model is built exactly to scale as the original Columbia was. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.
The Art of making half hulls is as old as ship building itself! Half Hulls were crafted by ship builders to give three-dimensional shape to their hull designs.
The Columbia US-16, was the first 12 Meter to win the America's Cup, she was built in 1958.
The New York Yacht Club for the 1958 America's Cup defense, commissioned Olin Stephens to design Columbia and she was to be built at the well known Nevins Boatyard in New York. Her design was based on the successful, pre-war 12 Meter, Vim.
For the 1958 America's Cup the challenger was the Royal Yacht Squadron's 12 Meter Sceptre. But she was no match for the Columbia which won all 4 first races.

The half hull model plaque measures 29.5"(75cm) x 7.8"(20cm) and the model measures 23.6"(60cm) long from bow to stern. It's an historic half hull model sailboat that is sure to become a treasured family heirloom.
