Hand Built Team New Zealand NZL 82 Half Hull Model by Abordage'
This expert level, highly detailed, museum quality, Team New Zealand model is brand new, fully assembled and ready for display (not a kit). The manufacturer is Abordage.
This America's Cup half hull model was crafted in mahogany and tropical hard woods by the traditional plank on bulkhead method. After the bulkheads are laid and the hull lines trued, the hull is planked with individual wooden strips to form a smooth silhouette.
The Team New Zealand NZL 82 model is then sanded, hand painted with glossy black hull and sponsors logos. The half hull is then mounted on a ready to hang light wooden plaque, with an engraved brass nameplate. The half hull model is built exactly to scale as the original Team New Zealand was. The task required skillful craftsmen hundreds of hours to accomplish.

The Art of making half hulls is as old as ship building itself! Half Hulls were crafted by ship builders to give three-dimensional shape to their hull designs.
Team New Zealand-NZL 82 was built in 2002 along with NZL 81. It was NZL 82 that was selected to race the 31st 2003 America's Cup Challenge.
The yachts were of the International Americas Cup Class. These yachts which, while not identical, are all designed to a particular formula, so as to make the boats involved in a competition roughly comparable, while still giving individuals the freedom to experiment with the details of their designs. The class was established prior to the 1992 America's Cup because of perceived shortcomings of the 12-metre class, which had been used in the America's Cup since 1958.
TNZ's 2003 defence was a disaster, going down 0-5 to Swiss challengers Alinghi. The defeat was largely down to NZL 82's reliability, or lack thereof. NZL 82 retired from two of the races, both in choppy seas, from multiple gear failures, and a broken mast respectively. Alinghi's SUI 64 proved to be quicker and more reliable. For the first time the America's Cup was going to Europe.
NZL 82 was refined and competed in the Louis Vuitton Acts which were used as the build up to the 2007 America's Cup. NZL 82 won the 2004 Louis Vuitton Season. Team New Zealand defeated Alinghi by a margin of 3 races to 1 in the final.
